An Utterly Pleasant Ska Pop Experience: The Amber Bugs

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

The latest tune from The Amber Bugs is simple in its intentions, messages and tone, or should I say 2tone?

"Spiders and Ghosts" is a fun catchy ear worm of a track that plays on the themes prevalent in its chosen genres of indie pop and and 3rd wave ska. Admittedly I'm not a fan of either of these genres, as they tend to be overplayed, but this combination is refreshing and delightful.

Simple horn lines, orchestral strings and twee guitar parts form the top end of this track, with the consistent rhythm section forming the foundation. It's a bit challenging to hear absolutely everything in the louder sections, and the production does feel very DIY. However, the sweet, string backed intro section is beautifully contrasted against the horn led ska punk choruses.

"Spiders and Ghosts" is wonderfully sensitive and delicate while still maintaining the catchiness needed to get people singing along. Despite its DIY production, The Amber Bugs demonstrate their sensitivity and authenticity with a charming whimsicality. I highly recommend you check them out via the link below.

Peace, Love & Cowbells,

Oscar
